The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, addressed the country this Friday regarding the approval of the state of emergency and even stressed that he will not hesitate to approve the renewal of this condition. The head of state anticipates that “at the end of November and beginning of December, Portugal will see an increase in the number of deaths and inmates in intensive care,” in a statement to the country, from the Belém Palace in Lisbon.

The current state of emergency began on the 9th and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, November 23. This renewal will take effect from 00:00 on Tuesday, November 24.

“As for the renewal of the State of Emergency, I will not hesitate for a second to approve the renewal of this State of Emergency,” admitted Marcelo, making it clear that he will approve the renewal that this state will take until December 23. “What we have to take for granted is that the EDE lasts as long as necessary, always with a democratic content within the Constitution and that the curve of the case can be broken, so that this also affects those who are in intensive care and to the dead. ” , stressed.

Despite not anticipating the measures that the Government will announce this Saturday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa assured that the health authorities have more specific data on the cases, so “we can adjust the measures to municipalities with varying degrees of severity.”

The President of the Republic described as “probable” the arrival of “a third wave between January and February” and that this “will be all the greater if the figures are raised a month earlier.”

Marcelo highlighted the existence of “brutal pressure” on the SNS, and that “it will increase in the coming days and weeks, which implies the demand to try to contain the course of the pandemic in December.”

According to the Constitution, this legal framework that allows the suspension of the exercise of some rights, freedoms and guarantees, cannot last more than 15 days, without prejudice to renewals with the same term.

To decree, the President of the Republic must listen to the Government, which issued a favorable opinion on Thursday, and must have the authorization of the Assembly of the Republic, which was given today, with votes in favor of the PS and PSD, abstentions of the BE, CDS-PP and PAN and votes against by PCP, ENP, Enough and Liberal Initiative.
