It is the first time that Adolfo Mesquita Nunes has spoken publicly and openly about the internal life of the CDS since the January congress that elected Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos as party leader. In an opinion article published in the Observer, the former vice president of Assunção Cristas criticizes the agreement drawn up with Chega in the Azores and even says that this alliance compromises the “identity and survival” of the party.

The Christian Democrat, one of the faces of the most liberal wing of the CDS, was one of the 54 personalities who launched the open letter released by the newspaper Público, calling for a sanitary cordon around extremism. The movement, even in synchronization – It was understood as an implicit criticism of the agreement reached in the Azores, although that was not the original objective of the document or, at least, of all the signatories.
The one who did not stay was Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos. “What I see in the published opinion is that there are many people on the right who prefers the corridors of Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real instead of wanting to correspond to a vocation to change a real right that exists in our country ”, criticized the CDS leader.
In the article now published in The Observer, Adolfo Mesquita Nunes responds to the criticism by suggesting that Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos is fighting against the windmills: the enemy is not within the CDS; but out.

Nuno Melo and Manuel Monteiro, for their part, defended Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos and said that the agreement was inevitable and will have advantages for the right wing.

The issue must mark the next National Council of CDS, the highest body between congresses, with no date yet set.
