COVID-19. The north is worse than Paris, Madrid or Milan

The virus is growing across the country at different rates. There are counties in the north where the contagion broke out in early October and has since stabilized at an extremely high level of new infections. But half of the 77 municipalities that entered the high-risk list this week are in the Central region, where in two weeks the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants has increased by 60%. Municipalities such as Manteigas (see text to the side), Seia, Proença-a-Nova and Mealhada jumped directly to an incidence level higher than 480 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, double the high risk level.

The areas of Guarda, Covilhã and Aveiro are among those that deserve the most concern. “In the Central region, the current epidemiological pattern reveals the existence of a high number of small and medium outbreaks, which indicates the existence of family transmission chains, almost always associated with collective meals and moments of coexistence. Most of the outbreaks involve between 4 and 135 people, ”explains João Pedro Pimentel, regional health delegate at the Center, also referring to the burden of contagion in homes. “Outbreaks related to work were not particularly significant, but in universities they reached higher values. In schools up to 12th grade, there were mostly sporadic cases at the beginning of the school year, but now there are major outbreaks. ”
