Atlético de Madrid forward Luis Suárez was the last of the most mediatic in Europe to face Covid-19. The infection was detected and announced by the Uruguayan federation, which was, even isolated, with Darwin Núñez. Suárez was the second compatriot of the Benfica forward to test positive, after Palmeiras’ left-back Matías Viña.

The situation of the Uruguay team will be the one that worries the most in Luz. In addition to the two players, goalkeeper Rodrigo Muñoz and a member of Óscar Tabárez’s technical team also have Covid-19. There are strong fears in Uruguay that the virus has spread to other players. The rest of the members of the delegation tested negative, but it is impossible to ignore the possibility of new cases – the Directorate General of Health (DGS), for example, estimates that “the incubation period (time between exposure to the virus until the appearance of symptoms) to be between one and 14 days’.

Darwin Núñez was not the only Benfica player in whose selection cases Covid-19 was detected. It happened, for example, with Haris Seferovic. The Swiss federation announced on 10 November that Nice’s right-back Jordan Lotomba and a member of the medical team were infected. Four days later, it was the turn of right-back Silvan Widmer and fitness coach Oliver Riedwyl, who were out for the same reason.

In the Belgian national team to which central defender Jan Vertonghen was called up, Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski tested positive before the individual with Switzerland last week.

Brazil, which has striker Everton Cebolinha, also recorded cases of Covid-19, midfielder Gabriel Menino, Palmeiras and left-back Alex Telles, although in the latter case “outside the transmission phase,” according to the CBF, Rodrigo Lasmar.

All Benfica players who served the national teams – Odysseas Vlachodimos, Jan Vertonghen, Nicolás Otamendi, Haris Seferovic, Everton Cebolinha, Darwin Núñez, Luca Waldschmidt and Taarabt – will be tested as soon as they arrive in Portugal. The same will happen to Gonçalo Ramos, who was in the U21 but did not leave the country. It will also be tested. These protocols were already respected in the last stop of the teams.

It should be remembered that goalkeeper Mile Svilar was the only positive case of Covid-19 this season in Luz. It was detected after being in the U21 in Belgium and the infection is suspected to have occurred in your country.
