The former centrist leader is not surprised by the PSD and CDS understanding of Chega in the Azores. On the contrary, he even understands it. “I do not think it will undermine the foundations of the regime,” exclaims Manuel Monteiro, who believes that the founding parties of the regime have to understand what went wrong and why they are losing ground to Chega.
The former CDS leader, who returned to the party in April of this year, believes that all the unrest in the country over this issue arises from the fear of the left and some members of the PSD that the understanding of the right reaches the continent and that Rui Rio become prime minister.
“Many people who oppose Dr. Rui Rio in the PSD, who did not like him to be prime minister, are against it, not because of the agreement itself, but because of the potential it brings to make him prime minister, even if the PSD is second in a legislative election ”, he adds.
He defends a new understanding between PSD and CDS, a kind of new Democratic Alliance (AD) for the next legislative elections and stresses that the right wing, that is, the CDS, must be able to capture the voters that Chega is captivating.
“This only happens because the objective and manifest weaknesses of the CDS and PSD impede Chega’s growth,” he argues. “What PSD and CDS should do, and not do, is work to build an alternative project on the positive side,” he explains.
Asked if one day he plans to contest the leadership of the CDS again, Manuel Monteiro says that he believes that Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos will know how to lead the party. But leave everything open. “If he can bring the CDS to a successful conclusion, and I hope so, we will have a leader for many years to come.” But what if not? “We will have to talk,” he concludes.
Racist and xenophobic?
Manuel Monteiro recalls that Chega had the green light from the Constitutional Court, but if, finally, the party violates basic principles enshrined in the Basic Law, the Public Ministry must act.
If someone violates democratic freedom, “it is up to the Public Ministry, by itself, to trigger this process. It is up to the MP to defend legality and democratic values,” he says.
However, the former president of the CDS considers that taking this action would be a mistake. “The parties fight at the political level and this political fight should be carried out by the parties of the democratic right and, for me, there is only one, the CDS,” he concludes.
