Covid-19 in Portugal: higher daily number of people recovered and new maximum hospitalizations in intensive care | Coronavirus

Portugal registered 81 additional deaths from covid-19 and 4452 cases of infection. In total, the country has 3,553 deaths and 230,124 infections. The data was released in the daily update of the epidemiological bulletin of the General Health Directorate (DGS), with information related to Monday 16.


3,028 people are hospitalized (minus 12), a decrease after two consecutive days of increase. There are already 431 people in intensive care units (five more), which represents a new maximum.


With more than 7,290 people who managed to recover, the total rises to 149,445. This is the highest daily number of people who have recovered since the pandemic began. On May 24, the DGS bulletin indicated a higher value (9844), but due to a recount of the data. There are 2,919 fewer active cases, for a total of 77,126. This figure results from subtracting recoveries and deaths from the total number of infections.


The majority (2,941) of the new cases were identified in the North (66%), where 43 people died on the last day. In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region there were 812 new cases (18%) and 21 deaths occurred. The remaining deaths were recorded in Centro (11), Alentejo (four) and Algarve (two).


The overall mortality rate in Portugal is 1.5%. Approximately 87.5% of the victims who died with COVID-19 were over 70 years old: 3,107. It was in these age groups that the majority of people died on the last day: 14 men and seven women between 70 and 79 years ; 20 men and 35 women over 80 years of age. In the age group 50 to 59 years, two men and two men and a woman between 60 and 69 years died.


In terms of data by region, the North has the highest number of infection cases: 116,966. They are followed by Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (81,621), Centro (21,406, plus 353), Alentejo (4547, plus 243) and the Algarve (4238, plus 65). Madeira registers 721 infections (27 more) and the Azores 625 (11 more).


The highest number of deaths from covid-19 occurred in the north: 1650. Then Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (1323), Centro (444), Alentejo (83), Algarve (36), Azores (15) and Madeira (two ).
