At the S. João Hospital, in Porto, 8 people with the disease have already been treated, seven of whom are still hospitalized, of which four are in the infirmary, one in intermediate care and two in the intensive care unit.

At the Póvoa de Varzim / Vila do Conde Hospital Center the number of cases treated remains at 25 for the third consecutive day, with 16 people still hospitalized.

Even so, the Poveira unit announced today that it has converted seven outpatient clinics into a 10-bed room to respond to a possible increase in cases of ‘legionella’ and also covid-19.

In total, these three health units have registered, since the beginning of the outbreak, which continues to be of unknown origin, eight deaths of the 76 diagnosed, with 38 still hospitalized.

On Wednesday, the Public Ministry announced the opening of an investigation to investigate the causes of the outbreak, and the Vila do Conde City Council confirmed that technicians from the local Health Delegations are already on the ground doing analyzes and various industrial and commercial structures.

Legionnaires’ disease, caused by the bacteria ‘Legionella pneumophila’, is contracted by inhaling contaminated water vapor droplets (aerosols) so small that they carry the bacteria to the lungs, depositing it in the lung alveoli.
