Nurses denounce the ″ smoke screen ″ on patient transfers from the north

The Ordem dos Enferiros Norte accused the tutelage of “making a smokescreen” to the information about the transfer of patients from the north of the country to Lisbon.

“We received several reports of patient transfers from the north to the Lisbon area, which, for us, is only understandable in light of resources in the north depleted or near exhaustion. We are witnessing a passivity, at least in matters of communication, guardianship and the General Health Directorate that is not understood. It is a smokescreen for information on transfers, ”said João Paulo Carvalho, speaking with Lusa.

After describing that nurses from various hospitals show “fatigue and exhaustion,” the president of the Northern regional section of the Order of Nurses said he was aware that the Centro Hospitalar do Tâmega e Sousa (CHTS) is transferring patients infected by the new coronavirus to Lisbon, Coimbra, Aveiro, Braga, Viana do Castelo, Porto, as well as to the Misericórdia de Paredes hospital, and in the latter case, according to João Paulo Carvalho, the reports are “dramatic”.

“We were officially informed that the patients transferred to the Misericórdia de Paredes hospital are patients who have no indication for resuscitation in the event of cardiorespiratory arrest. We need to confirm that the Paredes hospital has a palliative care service and that these patients have all the necessary treatment for their condition. We are concerned about the treatment these patients are having at the end of their life. It cannot be worth everything, ”said the leader.

At stake is the hospital center, which last week registered 10% of national admissions for covid-19.

To Lusa and without answering questions about transfers or referral to Misericórdia de Paredes, a CHTS source said that this Thursday this hospital receives 188 hospitalized 19 covid-19 patients, 11 of whom are in intensive care.

João Paulo Carvalho defended a “more muscular” action and “trying to break chains of contagion” in the Tâmega e Sousa area.

“Currently we are with Vale do Sousa patients throughout the country and this is reflected in the pressure from neighboring hospitals,” he summarized.

Also according to data from the Northern section of the Order of Nurses, the The Guimarães and Famalicão hospitals “will have reached the limit of their capacities“e” we have already transferred patients to Santa Maria in Lisbon. “

“In these two hospital units, the covid-19 hospitalization services are complete. The emergency services are under brutal pressure and do not have the capacity to respond in an adequate, timely and quality manner. The equipment is highly deficient and exhausted. We have reports of nurses who are getting sick, they no longer endure so many hours because they are asked for overtime, ”described João Paulo Carvalho.

The Lusa agency requested a situation report from the Centro Hospitalar do Médio Ave (CHMA), which includes the Famalicão hospital, and the source from that hospital attributed “possible transfers” to other hospitals to the “need for differentiated care.”

“Famalicão does not have intensive care, so unfortunately, he will always have to move if the patient enters a critical condition. CHMA [que além de Famalicão tem unidade em Santo Tirso] is not out of stock. Yesterday [quarta-feira] it had 91 patients with covid-19 and the ability to increase responses, “said the same source.

Covid and non-covid-19 patients in the same service

The northern regional section of the Order of Nurses was Braga, also ahead of Lusa, which will request clarification on hospitalization “in the same intensive care service for covid and non-covid-19 patients” at the Braga Hospital.

“We have to understand how patients of different types are placed in the same service without increasing the risk for both hospitalized patients and health professionals,” said João Paulo Carvalho.

Faced with this complaint, the Braga hospital responded to Lusa that “with the increase in the number of critical patients due to covid-19, it was necessary to expand the hospitalization capacity in a new intensive area with effective separation between covid and non-covid patients.”

In a statement, this hospital unit, which welcomes 97 patients infected by the new coronavirus in the infirmary and 21 in intensive care, guaranteed that “all standards of safety and distance between patients are met.”

Lusa contacted the Guimarães hospital, but received no response.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 1.28 million deaths worldwide since December last year, including 3,181 in Portugal.
