Portugal once again reached a new high in deaths from the new coronavirus. This Wednesday, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the General Health Directorate (DGS), 82 deaths were reported due to Covid-19. Until then, the highest death toll was 62, counted on Monday. The ten days with the most deaths from Covid-19 were all in the month of November.

Of the 82 deaths, 44 were registered in the north, 19 in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, 17 in the center and two in Alentejo. The North and Center regions have never had so many deaths in 24 hours. The previous maximum in the North was on November 4, with 34 deaths, and in the Center on April 1 and 7, when 12 deaths were registered.

A most of the fatalities were over 80 years old, more specifically 27 men and 38 women. 10 men and five women between 70 and 75 years old died, a woman between 60 and 69 years old and a man between 50 and 59 years old.

This Wednesday 4,935 new cases of Covid-19 were registered, it is the fourth worst day in history: the day with the most new cases was November 7 (6,640), followed by November 8 (5,784) and November 6 (5,550).

Of the new cases, 2,845 were registered in the North region, which represents 58% of the total of new cases registered in the last 24 hours. In Lisbon and the Tagus Valley there were 1,185 more cases (24%), in the Center region another 743 cases (15%), in Alentejo another 44 (0.9%) and in the Algarve 80 (1.6%). Madeira represented another 17 cases (0.3%) and the Azores another 21 (0.4%).

Portugal represents 192,172 confirmed cases of infection and 3,103 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The country registered again new highs for hospitalizations, specifically in intensive care. According to Wednesday’s bulletin, there are 2,785 people hospitalized for Covid-19, 43 more cases than this Tuesday. Portugal has been reaching new highs for hospitalizations for four consecutive days.

Of these 2,785 hospitalized people, 391 in Intensive Care Units (ICU), nine more cases compared to the previous day. On Monday there were also 391 Covid-19 patients in intensive care.

As in deaths, the ten days with the most hospitalizations, in total and in the ICU, were all registered in the month of November.

In the last 24 hours, there were more recovery cases than active cases. This Wednesday 1,378 new active cases of Covid-19 were registered, totaling 78,716, and another 3,475 recovered, totaling 110,353 recovery cases since the start of the pandemic.

There are still 956 fewer surveillance contacts in the last 24 hours, for a total of 89,107.
