Frozen coronavirus prompts China to step up inspection of imported products

The National Health Commission of China published new regulations to intensify control over imported products, after detecting the new coronavirus in frozen packaging, including chicken wings from Brazil.

The new regulation establishes the thorough disinfection of the containers of frozen products and the adequate protection of the personnel in contact with these products, in addition to the increase in sanitary inspections throughout the chain, from arrival at customs to the point of sale.

“If the result of a test [a um produto congelado importado] positive, it must be returned or destroyed, as stipulated by the regulations ”, it is determined.

The Chinese authorities also emphasize the need to record the route taken by each of these products, to facilitate the monitoring of possible infections.

The ad appears the next day a longshoreman in the port of Tianjin, in the north of the country, has been diagnosed with covid-19.

The man became infected after contacting a package in which traces of the virus were found, according to local media.

On Saturday, authorities in Dezhou city, Shandong province, claimed to have found traces of the virus during a random inspection of packages of frozen pork from Germany, and landed in Tianjin port on October 19, which assumes virus has survived in packaging for at least 19 days.

On September 24, two dockworkers in the eastern port of Qingdao also contracted the virus when they came into contact with packages containing traces of Covid-19.

The infection resulted, weeks later, in an outbreak in the city, according to Chinese authorities.

In recent months, several frozen products from countries such as Ecuador or Brazil have alerted the Chinese authorities.

Last August, the central province of Shanxi announced a ban on the purchase, sale and use of white shrimp from Ecuador, after detecting several cases of coronavirus in packaging.

The southeastern city of Shenzhen detected traces of the virus in packages of frozen chicken wings from Brazil and, a month earlier, in seafood from Ecuador.

The total number of active infected people in mainland China is 424, of which eight are in serious condition.

China has registered a total of 4,634 deaths from the disease and 86,245 infected since the start of the pandemic in the city of Wuhan, in the center of the country.
