It began to be, in March, a temporary situation, but it continues and health professionals do it about 200 meters on public roads.

Doctors and nurses from the Hospital de Barcelos are forced to wear a uniform in the city’s Municipal Pavilion and then walk about 200 meters on public roads, in uniform, when entering and leaving the shift. With regard to JN, this situation has been occurring since March and “the explanation is that the employees cannot bring their clothes into the hospital facilities,” said João Paulo Carvalho, president of the North Regional Section of the Ordem dos Enferiros .

The situation, which has been going on for eight months, has displeased the health professionals at the Barcelos Hospital who, at the beginning of the pandemic, temporarily agreed to wear a uniform in a room of the ward. “We accept this solution because we think it would be the best at that stage and a provisional situation. We did not expect it to continue until today,” said one of the nurses from the hospital’s covid unit, who asked not to be identified.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the hospital decided to build a common changing room, to prevent professionals from wearing uniforms in their services. “But the truth is that until today it has not been concluded nor is it expected to be ready in the next few days,” adds the professional.

Safety concerned

This decision “is putting into question not only the safety of the professionals, but of all the athletes and employees of the pavilion. There is a risk of cross infection, since the professional takes the uniform to the hospital after passing.” areas outside the unit, the same happens at the end of the shift, when they return to the pavilion with the uniform they worked for 12 hours. And since there is already sporting activity in the pavilion, the risk of contagion increases ”, defends João Paulo Carvalho.

“We are not sure, neither we nor the athletes nor everyone who attends the pavilion. We have already expressed our displeasure to the hospital administration, even in writing, but to date we have not had a response,” adds the nurse.

The answer, however, was given yesterday by João Paulo Carvalho, who met with the Board of Directors of the Hospital de Barcelos, to express his disgust for the situation. “We said it was unacceptable, that it violated the dignity and safety of professionals,” says João Paulo Carvalho.

“They told us that they understood the problem, that it was a remedy, but that at this point they were going to allow the employees to wear a uniform in the hospital and that they were going to make a common wardrobe, they just didn’t say when,” he concludes. JN tried unsuccessfully to get a reaction from the Board of Directors.
