The upward trend in the number of hospitalized patients, which has already caused the Ministry of Health to issue an order to hospitals to activate their respective contingency plans and suspend “non-urgent care activity” during November, has been constant since early October – on day 1 there were 682 people hospitalized, 107 of them in intensive care units.

In the ICU alone, there were 320 people this Thursday, 5 less than this Wednesday, but 49 more than at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic, on April 7.

As also happened in this phase, most of the new cases are now still being registered in the northern region of the country, where 17 more people died this Thursday: 58.5% of the new infections were analyzed there.

The Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, where there were two dozen deaths in the last 24 hours, accounted for just over a quarter of new cases: 25.5%.

The Center had 11.5% of the cases and 8 more deaths; and Alentejo, where one person died, registered 1.2% of new infections, a percentage that in the Algarve rose to 2.2%. In Madeira and the Azores, as has also happened, the number of new infected people is more residual: 7 and 6 respectively.

Through the figures released this Thursday, it can be seen that, as usual, most of the deaths recorded -31- correspond to men and women over 80 years of age.

Even so, one of the 46 deaths registered in the last 24 hours refers to a patient between 40 and 49 years old, a remarkable fact since, since the start of the pandemic, only 36 people under 50 have died, which equates to a percentage of 1.31%. Less than 40 years, since March and in association with Covid-19, nine people have died in total.

Women between 40 and 49 years old returned this Thursday, as had happened the day before, to register the highest number of new infections: 476. This was, in fact, the age group that registered the most new cases – 779 -, along with data relating to the male sex. As usual, the highest number of infections was registered again among citizens between 20 and 59 years old.

There are currently 67,157 active cases of infection by the new coronavirus in the country, 1,857 more than this Wednesday.

The number of recovered people has also increased: in the last 24 hours, another 2,507 people were considered cured. Currently 91,453 cases have been recovered. Since the start of the pandemic, 161,350 people have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal.
