Portugal exceeds 160 thousand cases and adds 46 more deaths from covid-19

Portugal registered 4,410 cases of covid-19 this Thursday and accumulated 25 more people hospitalized, despite the decrease in intensive care. There are 46 more deaths, the third worst day in history.

After 7,497 positive cases were added to the statistics on Wednesday, with the Government clarifying that 3,570 were registered late, closing yesterday’s daily total at 3,927, this Thursday the figures once again exceeded the threshold of four thousand. With another 4,410 positives, the accumulated figure has risen to 161,350 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Another 46 people died, following the black record of 59 deaths recorded on Wednesday, with the death tally registering 2,740 lives lost to covid-19 since the disease was detected in Portugal just over nine months ago.

Of the 46 fatalities, 25 men and 21 women, 20 lived in the Lisbon Region and the Tagus Valley (RLVT), which recorded the deadliest day in the area since the start of the pandemic, having now accumulated 1,077. the Northern Region (RN) 17 people died in the last 24 hours (1223 in total), while the center added eight more deaths, for a cumulative of 341, and the Alentejo recorded the loss of another life, for a total of 54 .

The number of hospitalized patients continues to rise and break records, with 2,362 people hospitalized, 320 of whom (minus five) in intensive care units.

Another 2507 people were considered to have recovered, and 91,453 patients now cover covid-19. Overall, there are 67,157 active cases of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal, 1,857 more than on Wednesday, while the number of people under surveillance increased in 1876 to 67,442.

Woman under 50 among 46 deaths

It is a fact, the covid-19 is particularly deadly for the elderly, but the bulletin of the General Health Directorate (DGS) released this Thursday records the death of a woman under 50 years of age – it is the 27th victim of this age group (15 men and 12 women) since the start of the pandemic.

In the next step, the deaths of two more men under the age of 60 are recorded, an age group that notes deaths almost every day. One or two at a time, for a cumulative 82 lives lost in this age range, from 50 to 59 years, with 58 men and 24 women.

Mortality is proportional to age, with the following age group (60-69 years) being four more deaths (three men and one woman), for a cumulative 239 (167 men and 72 women). It is accentuated in the following age group (70-79 years), with the registration of eight more deaths (three men and five women), for a total of 542 (336 men and 206 women).

As expected, the age group of the elderly accounts for 67% of deaths in the last 24 hours (31 of 46, 17 men and 14 women). Global figures, the highest age group concentrates 74.5% of total deaths from covid-19, 1841 in 2470, with 821 men and 1020 women.

The Northern Region has exceeded 75,000 coronavirus infections since the pandemic touched Portuguese soil on March 2. According to DGS data, counted until midnight on Wednesday and released this Thursday at the beginning of the afternoon, with more than 2,580 accumulated cases, 75,455 are now positive, for a total of 1,223 deaths, 17 of which in the last 24 hours , which is equivalent to half of the fatalities added on Wednesday.

The RLVT, the second most affected by the pandemic, added more than 1,000 cases for the second day in a row, after three days of calm after the weekend. With more than 1,124 infections, the accumulation now goes to 64,374 in the area of ​​influence of the capital of Portugal.

In the Central Region, new cases exceed 500 for the second consecutive day. There are 509 more cases, for a total of 14,369 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Algarve, which for nine months was the continental territory least affected by the pandemic, surpassed the Alentejo in number of cases on Wednesday. This Thursday, the southernmost region of Portugal registered a new daily maximum of infections, with 97 reported cases, bringing the total to 3,129.

Alentejo, with 87 more cases, the second worst daily record since the beginning of the pandemic, now has 3,118 records of infection associated with SARS-CoV-2.

On the islands, insularity seems to help mitigate the effects of the pandemic. The Azores, which have not registered deaths since May 12, added six more positives, for a total of 394.

Madeira, which only lost one life to covid-19, added seven more positive cases, to 511 in total.
