This Tuesday, Portugal registered 45 more deaths from covid-19, one less than the daily maximum registered yesterday. As for new cases, 2,596 cases were registered in the last 24 hours, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS).
This is the second day with the most deaths since the start of the pandemic, although they have notably reduced the number of new daily cases that at the end of last week exceeded four thousand, and on Friday they reached the historical maximum in Portugal, with 4,656 new infected.
According to DGS data there are 94 new patients admitted, now reaching a total of 2349, of which 320 are in intensive care units, which represents an increase of 26 new admissions compared to the previous day.
One of the great highlights of this Tuesday’s epidemiological bulletin is related to the significant increase in patients who recovered from covid-19, who were 3,295 more than yesterday, totaling 86,589 since the start of the pandemic.
In fact, since the beginning of the pandemic, this is the second day with more cases of recovered patients, only surpassed by the figures registered on May 24, the day on which 17,549 medical discharges were reported, almost 10,000 more than the previous day, something that at the time was explained by the fact that DGS made a change in the methodology in the data record, so the numbers were updated. Therefore, the 3295 recovery cases in today’s bulletin can even be considered an absolute record in Portugal.
There are even fewer 781 cases of contacts under surveillance Compared to the previous 24 hours, there are now 65,647 people who are being monitored by the health authorities.
The northern region has more cases and more deaths
Regarding the regions, the north continues to have the highest incidence of the pandemic, with 1,547 additional new cases and 21 more deaths in the last 24 hours. A little further down appears the Lisbon region and the Tagus Valley, which add 626 new cases and 18 more deaths.
The central region recorded five more deaths and 292 new infections, while in Alentejo there was one more death from covid-19 on a day when there were 57 new infections.
Meanwhile, Algarve, Madeira and Açores did not register deaths in the last 24 hours, with 47 new infections in the Algarve region.
It should also be noted that The 45 deaths declared this Tuesday refer to people over 60 years of age, with the highest incidence in the age group over 80 years of age, in a total of 34 deaths.
New maximum hospitalizations in the last 24 hours
According to the epidemiological bulletin, Portugal today once again exceeded the maximum hospitalization rates for covid-19 since the start of the pandemic with the registration of 2,349 hospitalized patients, 320 of whom were in intensive care, according to the General Directorate of Health DGS).
In the last 24 hours, 94 more people were hospitalized, now adding 2,349 hospital admissions.. Regarding intensive care, 26 other people were hospitalized, adding 320, according to Lusa.
Marcelo admitted mistakes in the pandemic
This Wednesday at midnight, a set of restrictive measures came into effect in the 121 counties defined as having a high incidence of infections, which were announced by Prime Minister António Costa last Saturday. These measures include the civic duty of home collection and telework.
In an interview with RTP, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa admitted that there were errors in the handling of the covid-19 pandemic and said he was “responsible” for them: “The President of the Republic is the most responsible for the errors.” The head of state made an effort to explain to the Portuguese the reasons for a new declaration of a state of emergency, which will be “different” from the one in force in March, April and May, and of a more limited scope.
Marcelo admits that this second wave of the pandemic came earlier than expected and admitted delays in hiring medical personnel and difficulties in tracking the contacts of those infected, and the progress the country made in this regard was “insufficient.” He also admitted communication failures, “confusion” in the way the bases were transmitted and added that the conferences of the General Directorate of Health, like everything that is repeated a lot, “tire.” “It is necessary to reinvent communication, which is very difficult,” said Marcelo, who also highlighted the “great consideration” for those who do the conferences, a “brutal effort.”
On several occasions, the President of the Republic supported the decisions of the health and political authorities, admitting errors, but underlining that throughout these months new problems appeared every day: “Who can plan when problems arise every day? ? “
Admitting that the second wave of the pandemic was only expected in the winter, but that “everything accelerated” meanwhile, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa left a warning: following mathematical models, Portugal would arrive at the end of November with about ten thousand cases of contagion. by COVID-19.
“If we follow the purely mathematical models, we have the possibility of doubling every 15 days,” he warned, highlighting that in this scenario “we would be talking about 8, 9, 10,000 infected.” The President of the Republic added that “the mathematical progression has not coincided with the clinical reality”, that is, because there are measures that stop the contagion, but he warned that, with figures close to these, we will have a “very serious” pressure on the hospitalization and care. intensive.
It is in this context that Marcelo inserts the state of emergency that was requested by the Government this Monday, highlighting that it will be more limited than in March. For various reasons, one of which is the public reception of the measures: “Society is tired.” And, another factor to take into account, now adds to the health concerns of March the concern about the economy and employment.
The increase in knowledge about the disease, as well as in the response capacity of the National Health Service, were other points highlighted by the President of the Republic to justify a more limited state of emergency than what happened eight months ago.
