Thousands of people gathered on the cliffs of Praia do Norte, in Nazaré, after it was announced on social networks that giant waves were expected for this Thursday and that the IPMA had put Leiria on an orange alert due to the agitation of the sea. The waves can reach 10/11 meters.

Due to the situation of the pandemic, the Chamber and the Captaincy of Nazaré decided to cut off pedestrian access to the Farol road, to contain the excessive concentration of the public that watches the giant waves and guarantee the safety conditions, informed the captain of Porto.

Pedestrian access is going to be prohibited and we are going to appeal to the dispersal of people concentrated near Forte de S. Miguel to try to reduce the conglomerates ”, Zeferino Henriques, commander of Porto da Nazaré (Leiria district) told Lusa.

The scenario “attracts many foreign and Portuguese surfers to surf in Praia do Norte, and simultaneously people from various countries who travel to see,” said the president of the Chamber of Nazaré, Walter Chicharro.

The Nazarene mayor recognizes the difficulties: watching the waves “is not an event, it depends on the authorizations and regulations of the health entities.” On the other hand, “it is complicated, even from the legal point of view, to condition the movement of people, because neither the country nor Nazaré are closed,” added Walter Chicharro.
