The Porto Civil Protection Commission (CPCP) will request the Government this Wednesday to decree a curfew in the district. But to accompany this recommendation, the president of the Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP), Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues, defends “stronger” measures to the detriment of those he considers “case-by-case measures.” To mitigate the number of COVID-19 infections in the district, he advocates returning to the state of emergency for 15 days.

Only with the return to the state of emergency does it consider that it is constitutionally possible to move towards the implementation of a set of measures like this one. To do this, it asks the Government to decide in the coming days. The Gaian mayor at the head of the AMP supports that all the measures are “anchored” in a state of emergency, so that the municipalities do not advance to “single measures”.

For the recommendations to reach the Government with one voice, the AMP will meet next Friday. Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues emphasizes that the problem of the pandemic must be dealt with in a “regional” rather than local way. For this reason, it emphasizes rejecting any measure of “municipal nature, such as, for example, the closing of borders between municipalities:” It would be a serious mistake.

The mayor of Matosinhos maintains that the circulation between municipalities should be reduced to the essential, emphasizing that it is not about movements related, among others, to work or health.

Matosinhos had already announced on Tuesday the change of the closing time of the shopping centers to 9:00 p.m., the restaurants will also close at 10:00 p.m. This Wednesday, at a press conference, he listed other recommendations that the Government has already followed to postpone the possibility of an interruption in the services of the county’s intensive care units.

Luísa Salgueiros also advocates returning to the state of emergency before November 15 to contain cases of contagion until the Christmas period. To do this, it also proposes that students from the 3rd cycle onwards start taking classes from home.

The request for a mandatory curfew goes to the Government after the increase in the number of COVID-19 infections in the district. The objective is to find a “balance between the economy and public health”, Marco Martins, president of the CPCP, advances to PUBLIC, who defends this alternative to avoid “another confinement”. The document will be discussed at the next council of ministers on Saturday.

Experts warned on Wednesday that the northern region could reach 7,000 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection next week. Heard by Lusa, they affirmed that there are “several municipalities” at a “level similar to the three of Tâmega and Sousa, where more restricted measures were imposed.”
