The Director General of Health rules out the possibility that the test of the Formula 1 Grand Prix, which took place this weekend, in the Algarve, will translate into an increase in new cases confirmed by Covid-19, ensuring that the recommended measures by the Directorate- Most of them were met with the Department of General Health (DGS).

“Most of the benches complied with the regulations, only two did not comply and that is why we changed the regulations of these benches when transferring people to another sector,” explained Graça Freitas, this Monday during the DGS daily press conference. “In most cases, people were distant and wearing a mask,” he said.

After the criticism generated by the images on Saturday at the Portimão racecourse, the organization of the event was forced to close some stands to guarantee the distance of the 27,500 spectators authorized by the DGS. Graça Freitas admitted that there were “discrepancies between the recommendations and the ability to inspect.” Despite everything, the Director General of Health says that the DGS “also learns lessons” – in this case, the restriction of events or the limitation of the audience in them – but denies that the “situation was catastrophic” or that “it may some dramatic event come up ”after many people did not respect the rules of social distance on one of the days of the event.

Graça Freitas also points out that “the responsibility lies with the citizens.”

“If there is a sticker asking the person not to sit down, it would be good if he did not sit down,” he said, rejecting the responsibility of the DGS in the meeting of people: “The DGS makes recommendations, it is up to the citizens to comply.”

Explaining the authorization of the event, Graça Freitas recalled the “previous positive experiences”, namely the Festa do Avante, “religious demonstration” in Fatima and “various pilot tests in football”. In addition to the low contagion rate in the Algarve, highlighting that this Monday only 27 more were registered in the bulletin
