Berlin police are investigating an attack on a building belonging to the Robert Koch Institute, the government agency responsible for disease control and monitoring the pandemic situation in Germany.

According to the authorities, quoted by AFP, “several people still to be identified” were seen during the night of this Saturday throwing “incendiary devices” and bottles at the building. The attack caused a small fire, which was extinguished by the security guard. The incident caused minor damage to the facade, including broken glass. It caused no injuries.

The police did not rule out possible political motivations, taking into account the role the institute plays in daily communication of the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany, says AFP.

New preventive measures taken by the German government following the increase in the number of cases in the country sparked a new wave of protests. This Sunday, some two thousand people gathered in Berlin for a demonstration that coincided with the start of a three-day summit of the World Health Organization (WHO) that was supposed to take place in the city. During the meeting, held online, the Covid-19 pandemic will be discussed, among other topics.

The protest was finally dispersed by the authorities, because the protesters did not follow the rules of social distance and did not wear a mask.

The Robert Koch Institute announced this Sunday 11,176 new cases of infection by the new coronavirus and 29 deaths. The country has registered more than 10,000 cases a day for four days. The death rate is now 2.3%. So far, 429,181 cases of Covid-19 and 10,032 deaths have been confirmed in the country.
