And if we look at this week’s numbers, we can see that it was the darkest in terms of new infections, even compared to the worst week in April, when we were still at the peak of the pandemic and in lockdown. Between April 6 and 12, 5,307 new cases were registered, in that month the average number of cases per day was 759.4 infections. And in this last week, between Monday and Sunday, 18,775 new infections were registered in the national territory, an average of 2,682.1 cases per day.

The bulletin released this Sunday reports 19 deaths (21 deaths were registered the day before), making a total of 2316 since the start of the pandemic.

As in the previous two days, the number of hospitalizations for covid-19 registered a new maximum in Portugal: 1,574 people are hospitalized, 119 more than on Friday, one of the highest daily increases in history. Of these, 230 are hospitalized in intensive care units (9 more than on Friday).

There was also an increase in the number of active cases, an indicator that has been growing since mid-August and that had its first decline last Tuesday, with 71 fewer active cases. However, the next day, this indicator rose again and reached the highest value in history this Saturday, so there are another 1,523 active cases, in a total of 47,493.

On the other hand, the number of recovered cases is also significant, despite being lower than that registered in recent days: there are 1,035 more cases recovered, in a total of 68,877. At least 58,849 people continue to be monitored by health authorities, another 1,725 ​​from the previous day.


North again with most cases

A large part of the new cases (1,696 or 65.8%) were registered in the North region – which this Thursday has some regions with stricter rules to contain the spread of the virus – and around 16% in Lisbon and the Valley of the Tagus. (492 new cases).

In the distribution of cases by region, it is possible to notice that Lisbon and Tagus Valley It is still the country with the highest accumulated number of cases in the country, but the North region already has close values ​​in terms of new cases due to the increase in recent weeks. In total, there are 52,832 records of infection and 927 deaths from covid-19 (plus eight).

THE North It has 50,299 cases and 1,022 deaths, it is the region with the highest number of deaths, ten of which occurred on Saturday. the Center it has 9951 infections (more than 290) and 291 deaths. THE Alentejo it totals 2,412 cases (44 new) and 36 deaths (one more). In the Algarve there are 2469 cases of infection (plus 42) and 25 deaths. THE Madeira recorded 383 cases of infection (11 new) and zero deaths since the start of the pandemic. the Azores registered 340 cases (two more) and 15 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Data from the DGS report indicate that, of the total registered deaths, 1,135 are women and 1,181 men – and in terms of infections, 54,054 are men and 64,632 women. The 19 deaths registered this Saturday refer to 16 older people. 80 years old, two between 70 and 79 years old and one person between 20 and 29 years old. The disease caused by the new coronavirus is more deadly in the age group older than 70 years: Covid-9 killed 1989 people of this age, which represents 78% of all deaths registered in all age groups.
