Eight districts are under red warning due to the passage of the Barbara depression. Rain and strong winds mainly affect the central and southern regions, mainly during the afternoon of this Tuesday.

In the early hours of the depression, the National Civil protection (ANEPC) registered more than 650 occurrences, especially in Lisbon and Setúbal.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) warns of the possibility of floods. The weather is expected to improve after 18:00.

Rain and wind should continue through the night, eventually with less intensity.

Civil Protection registered 654 occurrences and puts three more districts in orange

Until the end of the morning, Civil Protection registered 654 incidents due to bad weather, especially in urban areas north of the Tagus River, and placed three more districts in the south of the country on special orange alert.

In a press conference after the meeting of the National Center for Operational Coordination (CCON), held at the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, the Minister of the Interior stated that the 654 incidents due to bad weather involved some 2,200 operations and there was no record of “particularly serious events”.

Eduardo Cabrita also said that three more districts were placed on special orange alert today (the second most serious on the scale), totaling 11.

The districts that link Lisbon, Santarém, Setúbal, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Porto are Faro, Beja and Évora.

The orange alert status, which is activated when the level of risk is high and a dangerous situation is expected with conditions for the occurrence of unusual phenomena that can cause damage to people and property, compromising their safety, will be in effect until 11 am: 59 pm on Wednesday.

“The ANEPC today raised the orange alert level for the entire operational structure for 11 districts, mainly in the Center and South of the country, with the rest in yellow,” said the Minister of Internal Administration, noting that they were sent, this Monday . Monday afternoon, seven million messages written by mobile phone (SMS) as part of the emergency alert mechanism aimed at the population.

According to the minister, the period of greatest risk of rain and strong wind occurred on Monday, between 18:00 and 00:00, and the weather conditions worsened again this afternoon, from 12:00 until 18:00 : 00.

Present at the press conference, the national operational commander of ANEPC, Duarte Costa, specified that the situations of “greater risk and danger” will occur today, but the orange alert will last until Wednesday. since it is necessary to maintain the device to face what this meteorological situation may leave behind.

Duarte Costa said that, today, the most serious situation is expected to occur in the south of the country, mainly in the district of Faro.

The national operational commander also recommended that the population take preventive measures, such as defensive driving, obstruction of water, not crossing flooded areas and fixing existing mobile structures in homes.
