The Finnish group Nokia will manufacture for NASA what will be the first mobile mobile network on the Moon, as part of a permanent human project of the US space agency.

The “ultra-compact, energy efficient and space-resistant” 3G network, which will be “the first telecommunications network on the Moon”, should be deployed on the surface of the Moon by the end of 2022 “in a student module in which US company Intuitive Machines is in the works, Nokia said in a statement.

NASA confirmed to AFP that it is the first telecommunications network on the Moon, where the last steps of man date back to 1972.

The network, which must be self-configurable during its development on the Moon, must, in particular, make it possible to ensure the wireless connection of “all the activities that astronauts have to carry out, allowing the exchange of voice and video communications, telemetry and communication. exchange of biometric data or the implementation and operation of robots, “added Nokia.

Nokia’s North American subsidiary was awarded the $ 14.1 million contract (about 12 million euros, at current exchange rates) as part of a series of high-end contracts launched by NASA on Friday.

“The system will ensure communications on the surface of the Moon over long distances, at a higher speed and more reliable than current standards,” the space agency said in a statement.

Two American astronauts, including a woman, are scheduled to be on the Moon in 2024 on the Artemis 3 mission, and NASA plans to establish a permanent base on the satellite, in what is seen as a prelude to the possible mission to Mars.
