IPMA reinforces orange warning for Madeira

Madeira is currently under an orange alert, the second highest, due to wind and heavy rains, mainly between 3 and 9 am this Tuesday. Several municipalities in the RAM have placed firefighters and municipal civil protection services for prevention, as is the case with the alerts issued by the Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC).

In the archipelago of Madeira, the sky will be generally very cloudy, with periods of rain, sometimes intense at night and especially in the mountainous areas and south of the island of Madeira, with favorable conditions for storms. The rain will be temporarily heavy, sometimes in the form of downpours that can be accompanied by storms to the south and in mountainous areas. The strong southwest wind with gusts of up to 100 km / h on the South Coast, increasing to 130 km / h in mountainous areas.

Several RAM town councils have put firefighters and municipal civil protection services on hold, as is the case with the alerts issued by the Regional Civil Protection Service.

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has closed the recommended hiking routes in the Region, while the orange meteorological alert issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) is in force.

Likewise, Quinta do Santo da Serra will also be closed to the public as a preventive measure.

Civil Protection Recommendations for the population in the face of heavy rains and winds:

  • Be attentive to the warnings and recommendations of the competent authorities, keeping yourself informed of the evolution of the situation.
  • In case of flooding inside your home due to excessive rain, contact the local Fire Department and / or the Municipal Civil Protection Service of your municipality.
  • When driving in these conditions, slow down, driving with caution due to possible traffic congestion. Pay attention to layers of water that may form, do not drive or park in areas prone to flooding.
  • Pay attention to unblocking drainage systems and cleaning inert materials that can be carried away.

  • Close doors and windows and remove any loose objects on balconies and windowsills.
  • Whenever possible, avoid traveling to areas affected by this type of weather.
  • Do not go through areas with degraded buildings, due to the risk of collapse.
  • Pay attention to assembled structures (scaffolding, canopies, tents, roofs), which can be affected by stronger gusts of wind, as well as possible falling trees.
