In seven days, Portugal saw the number of people infected by the new coronavirus increase by almost 14,000, at a rate of 1,992 new daily cases, on average. This increase was driven by the North region, which added 7,489 infections, which corresponds to an average close to 1,070 per day.

Thus, it is not surprising that the three municipalities that make up the batch of municipalities with more than a thousand cases are from the North. Valongo, Vila do Conde and Vila Nova de Famalicão exceeded this threshold and brought the number of municipalities with more than a thousand infected to 21. In ten of these municipalities, the number of cases exceeds two thousand.

The largest weekly increases in the number of cases are registered in the municipalities of Lisbon, with 781 more infections, Sintra, with 653 more, Paços de Ferreira, with 565, and Porto, with 564.

If Lisbon, Sintra and Porto are the first, second and fourth most populated municipalities in the country, Paços de Ferreira has only 56.7 thousand inhabitants.

The capital of furniture saw the number of cases skyrocket by 76.5% and the 1,303 infected it registers exceed several much more populated counties, such as Santa Maria da Feira and Vila Nova de Famalicão, which have more than double the population of the municipality of Pacense.

AML with more than 3,500 cases
The Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) recorded 3,524 new infections in one week, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 38,971. The previous week, AML had registered 2,145 new cases.

Of the 18 AML counties, 10 have more than a thousand cases and eight have more than two thousand infected.

Lisbon, the most populous municipality in the country, has 8,241 cases, while Sintra, the second most populated municipality, registers 6,763. They are followed by Loures and Amadora, with 3,891 and 3,472 infected.

Porto with as many cases as Gaia
In the Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP), the sharp increase in cases in the Porto municipality, which saw the number of weekly cases accelerate from 363 to 564, means that Invicta only has four fewer infected than Vila Nova de Gaia, which registered 299 cases in the last week.

Although Gaia has 84,000 more inhabitants than Porto, the municipality of Rio de Janeiro has 2,888 cases and Porto 2,884.

In the AMP last week, there was an increase of 2,277 infected, almost double the 1,165 observed in the previous week.

The municipalities with the highest increases this week were Porto (564), Vila Nova de Gaia (299), Matosinhos (248) and Paredes (240).

Strong climbs elsewhere
Last week the sharp increase in cases was not exclusive to the two metropolitan areas. Among the counties outside the AML and AMP with more new infections, the aforementioned Paços de Ferreira stands out.

But also with a high number of new cases, cities such as Lousada appear, with 259 new infections, Guimarães, with 216, Penafiel, with 176, Felgueiras, with 154, Braga with 149, or Marco de Canavezes, with 121.

In Alentejo, the new outbreak in a home for the elderly in Beja has brought more than double the number of infected people to the municipality, from 58 to 119.

There are already 126 counties with more than 100 cases
The number of municipalities with more than a hundred infected people now stands at 126, which represents more than a third of the 308 municipalities in Portugal and eight more than seven days ago.

This week, the municipalities of Beja, Castelo Branco, Silves, Ponte de Lima, Figueira da Foz, Mangualde, Alcochete and Tavira passed the bar of 100 cases.

Even with two or fewer cases – the General Health Directorate (DGS) does not reveal data by municipality below three cases – there are 16 counties.
