The Student Brigade denounced this Monday the lack of conditions in the residences of the social action service of the University of Lisbon where students infected with the SARS-COV 2 virus live and demanded a response that safeguards their health.

To denounce the situation, the Student Brigade, “a group of student collectives that seeks to bring to the streets, movements and struggles a cohesive and determined vision of the student movement”, will be at 5 o’clock in the afternoon today in Cantina Velha, in the Social Action services of the University of Lisbon.

Speaking to Lusa Andreia Galvão, a member of the Student Brigade, said that the group has received various testimonies from students who are in residences and that they warned about the way they are being treated by the administration of Social Action Services of the University of Lisbon (SAS -UL), especially of infected students.

The students tell us that when they began their confinement, they were taken to Youth Hostels and that they cannot accommodate them. Many say that the rooms are shared with other infected students, that they are too small and cannot continue their studies normally.“, He said.

The students, according to Andreia Galvão, have also denounced, in addition to the poor living conditions, that they do not have the material conditions to attend classes “as normally as possible.”

According to Andreia Galvão, the students complain that they are not provided with a stable Internet connection with sufficient bandwidth.

When these students complained about this situation, they were told that they could attend distance classes on the hall floor.“, He said.

According to the Student Brigade, the dietary restrictions of some students with lactose and gluten intolerances -which can seriously affect their health- will not be respected and the food is always cold, so there is no way to heat it in the place.

“The main objective of the action is to denounce the failed performance of the social action services, which is especially serious considering the pandemic context in which we live. Students who are infected have to share rooms that do not have the conditions for their existence so much more for the continuation of their studies ”, he stressed.

We also want to denounce the lack of accommodation for students that is chronic in our higher education, and these students were relocated to Pousadas da Juventude because there were no other spaces. We are talking about Lisbon specifically, but in fact we have received several responses regarding this case and we know that this has already happened several times in the country.“, He said.

In this specific case of Lisbon, Andreia Galvão said, the students contacted the Saúde 24 line, denouncing the conditions in which they live, to which they were told that they were illegal.

“The students confronted the responsible entities, who were told that the quarantine protocol would have been verified and signed by a health delegate, but even today they are waiting to have access to that document,” he said.

Therefore, the Student Brigade demands an immediate response for these students affected by the pandemic, which protects their health and academic performance.

“The action that we are going to take today is very symbolic due to the period in which we live. But there will be some people to talk about this issue, take pictures of the posters and post on our social networks,” said Andreia Galvão.
