The now president had served a six-month suspension period after vandalizing the Estádio do Bonfim facilities in April 2019.

Paulo Rodrigues, leader of list B, was elected president of Vitória de Setúbal on Sunday, for the period 2020-2023, with a total of 587 votes.

The 43-year-old former soccer coach was the most voted of the three candidate lists, winning the club’s lead in the Portugal Championship against opponents Vítor Hugo Valente (list A), with 368 votes, and Nuno Soares (list C) , with 538, which was the second most voted.

In a total of 1,580 votes counted in the Antoine Velge pavilion, where the new governing bodies were installed after the electoral act of the outgoing President of the General Assembly, Cândido Casimiro, there were 52 blank votes and 35 invalid.

After the victory, Paulo Rodrigues did not hide his joy in the first statements he made in his new duties, highlighting the importance of unity among the Victorians.

“I am the happiest man in the world. Winning these elections represents for me the union of the members, which we want to have in the club again. It is an honor for me that this can happen,” he said.

The president of Vitória de Setúbal is aware of the arduous mission that lies ahead.

“This is without a doubt the biggest challenge of my life due to the size of Vitória, which is the fourth largest club in Portugal,” he said.

It is recalled that, after the resignation presented in September by the board chaired by Paulo Gomes, who had won the January 2020 elections, Paulo Rodrigues was the first associate to announce his candidacy for the presidency.

The now president, who had served a six-month suspension period after destroying the Estádio do Bonfim facilities in April 2019, stood for election after failing to present a list at the beginning of the year.

After speaking with journalists, Paulo Rodrigues approached a hundred supporters who were waiting for him outside the Antoine Velge pavilion in the early morning, where the partners could not enter due to security problems related to COVID-19.
