COVID-19. More than 1.1 million dead and 40 million infected. The United States and Peru are the worst cases

A covid-19 pandemic killed at least 1,111,152 people and has infected almost 40 million worldwide since December 2019, according to a survey by the agency France Presse (AFP). The latest AFP balance, published today, points to more than 39,742,730 officially diagnosed cases since the beginning of the epidemic, of which at least 27,341,000 are already considered cured.

AFP stresses, however, that the number of diagnosed cases reflects only a fraction of the actual number of infectionsGiven that some countries only evaluate severe cases, others prioritize screening tests, and many poor countries have limited capacity to perform this diagnosis.

On Saturday alone, there were 5,302 new deaths and 372,882 new cases of infection worldwide. In this accounting, we highlight India, which registered 1,033 new deaths in 24 hours, the United States (661 new cases of death) and Brazil (461). Counted from the beginning of the pandemic, The United States is the most affected country, with 219,289 deaths to 8,106,752 casesaccording to the Johns Hopkins University tally, which also mentions the recovery of about three million people.

After the United States, the most affected countries are the Brazil (153,675 deaths and 5,224,362 cases), the India (around 114 thousand deaths and 7.5 million infections), Mexico (86 thousand deaths and 847 thousand cases) and the United Kingdom (43 thousand deaths and 705 thousand cases).

Already in an analysis taking into account the total population, Peru emerges as the most dramatic case, with 102 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. In this table, the following Belgium (90 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants), Bolivia (73 dead) and the Brazil (72 deaths).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao) officially recorded a total of 85,672 cases, including 4,634 deaths and 80,786 recoveries.

Latin America and the Caribbean totaled around 379 thousand deaths and almost 10.5 million infected.

In Europe, there are almost 250 thousand deaths and just over seven million infected.

The United States and Canada are responsible for nearly 230,000 deaths and more than eight million patients.

Asia has, so far, almost 160,000 deaths and 9.6 million infections. In the Middle East, deaths number 52,000 and cases of infection exceed two million.

Africa accounts for 39,000 deaths and 1.6 million confirmed cases of covid-19. Oceania ranks last with 1,004 deaths and just over 33,000 cases of infection.

The figures now released are based on data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO).
