Worsening weather conditions tomorrow may lead to flooding

THE Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts a worsening of meteorological conditions as of Monday afternoon with the arrival of the Barbara depression. This depression will bring heavy, persistent and widespread rains on the territory of mainland Portugal, strong winds south of the Montejunto-Estrela mountain system and in the highlands, and strong maritime disturbances along the entire coast.

Following these forecasts, the National Emergency and Protection Civil issued an alert for the possible effects of this worsening of the weather.

For this reason, they also warn the population about the possibility of “rapid flooding in urban areas, due to the accumulation of waters rainwater or insufficient drainage systems ”and“ overflow of lines Water in the historically most vulnerable areas ”.

In view of the expected heavy rains, the Protection Civil also warns drivers about the “slippery road surface and the eventual formation of Water”.

Regarding the strong wind, the authority says that it can cause the fall of branches or trees and damage to assembled or suspended structures.

A Protection Civil warns of possible accidents on the Portuguese coast and the possibility of landslides.

The authority recalls that the possible impact of these effects can be minimized “by cleaning the drainage systems of waters rain water “, adoption “Defensive driving, slowing down and taking special care with the formation of Water on the roads ”, do not cross flooded areas and be especially careful when driving and staying near areas wooded.

In view of the anticipated bad weather conditions, the IPMA decided to place all districts of mainland Portugal under yellow warning.
