The name of Paulo Portas gained strength among the Social Democrats to lead a center-right co-link to contest the place with the Socialist and current mayor of Lisbon, Fernando Medina, in the next municipal elections, scheduled for 2021.
However, the former governor assured that he will not run because “he changed his life completely in 2016”, stating that “he has many professional commitments” that do not “coincide with the ideas of the candidates in 2021.”
Portas recognizes that the possibility sensitizes him, but that the ideas of leading this front do not change course. “Besides, everything in life has its moment: I was a candidate for Lisbon once, because the party absolutely needed it, but I don’t feel that autonomous vocation 20 years later,” he asked Público.
