Sporting with a clear idea: Vietto to follow in Acuña’s footsteps

The possibility was on the table until the market closed, but only after that did Al Hilal advance with € 7M for the player. SAD has rejected the official approach for now, because the market is closed.

Much of the assumptions behind the process that led to the departure of Marcos Acuña from Sporting – with the exception of the player’s behavior problem and the unfulfilled promises to renew the employment relationship by SAD – apply to the context that currently involves. Luciano Vietto, who knows THE GAME, should be exchanged for the lions within economic levels that will not leave him with losses after the investment of 7.5 million euros (€ M) made in 2019.

The “compensation” of Vietto’s salary has been one of the expressions of those responsible for Leonese football when they address the situation in Vietto, which SAD tried unsuccessfully to place until the end of the last transfer market.

The resulting financial outflow and inflow from Wendel’s business mitigated the company’s financial needs for the foreseeable future, but the transfer of Vietto, one of the highest-paid players, was around € 3.5m gross per season, well above above € 2 M placed as a salary cap – is on the agenda, something the market knows. In fact, it was precisely in this context that Al Hilal, from Saudi Arabia, approached Sporting to transfer the number 10 shirt. The values raised, specifically the € 7 million, fell short of what was admitted by Leonis managers, that, of course, to stretch the proposal they raised two previous arguments: the availability to transfer for amounts close to € 11 million and the fact that it is not the best time for a negotiation due to the closing of the registration period for players in Portugal, contrary to what happens in Saudi Arabia.

Now, the truth is that Al Hilal’s interest remains strong in the 26-year-old forward, even though the pressure SAD is under to sell was not the same before the Wendel deal. But in Alvalade, as in Acuña, a transfer is not allowed, to be made, for values that give rise to a greater challenge to what has been the work of Frederico Varandas as president of the club. So, it is necessary to consider the aforementioned issue of 50% of the player’s economic rights still held by Atlético de Madrid. However, in these accounts there is a fact that must be taken into account, namely, the salary savings that the departure of Vietto can represent for SAD, since the employment contract that binds the two parties expires only in 2024, implied a total pie of charges of € 14 million in salaries until then.
