The number of people recovered from Covid-19 in the Algarve rose to 1,240, 32 more than yesterday, which allowed the number of active cases in the region to drop to 843 (-7).

Figures that, although they may seem low, compared to other regions of the country, are “cause for concern” and justify the application of the measures decreed yesterday by the Government, warned the Regional Health Authority.

Today, in addition to the death of a 50-year-old man in Portimão, of whom South Information As reported first-hand, there are 26 new cases in the region, bringing the cumulative total to 2107, according to data revealed today at the press conference to assess the epidemiological situation in the Algarve.

In the Algarve hospitals, there are now 36 people hospitalized, four of them in intensive care.

Paulo Morgado, president of the Regional Health Administration, took advantage of the press conference to point out that, although the Algarve has the lowest Transmission Risk in the country, the reality experienced in the region “worries”.

“The fact that the Algarve is the region with the lowest RT gives us some comfort, but it does not eliminate the need to maintain the care and attention that we should have.”

Ana Cristina Guerreiro, regional health delegate, asked about the relevance of the application in the Algarve of the most restrictive measures decreed yesterday by the Government, in the sphere of the state of calamity, recalled that “Portugal is a small country” and it is difficult make this regional distinction.

“The figures for the Algarve, being small compared to other regions, do not have the same impact. People interpret them as not worrying. But they are worrisome, “he believes.

People are neglecting their behavior. That is why the measures are adapted to the figures for the region, “concluded Ana Cristina Guerreiro.

On a day when the number of hospitalized patients increased, Paulo Morgado assured that “we are far from exhausting all the resources we have for the hospitalization of Covid, either in the infirmary or in the Intensive Care Unit.”

“But the situation is very volatile and situations that complicate it may arise at any time,” said the same official.

Figures from the Regional Health Authority also point to the existence of 1,322 cases under active surveillance.

Ana Cristina Guerreiro revealed, on the other hand, that the age and geographical distribution of the cases “is very heterogeneous.”

And that happens, too, with respect to the inmates.

“There are cases of two young people in their 20s who, apparently, were healthy and did not have associated comorbidities that both have gone through complicated situations. I think they will even be in intensive care, “he concluded.
