Six members of the academic community are in prophylactic isolation.

About a week after returning to face-to-face classes at the University of Minho, the first case of Covid-19 was detected within the academic community. According to the COMUM, meanwhile information confirmed by the rectory of the UMinho, there is a positive case in the Faculty of Economics and Management of the university.

Contacted by ComUM, the rectory emphasizes that “there are no active transmission channels at the University of Minho” and that “if all the recommendations and safety standards are met,” there is no reason to be alarmed. In this sense, and because “the Contingency Plan of the University of Minho foresees a set of measures that include this type of situation”, no limitation will be imposed on access to the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences nor will it be closed.

With the first case of Covid-19 confirmed, the UMinho rectory explains that “the first measure is to protect infected people, in close collaboration with health authorities.” In the event of a new case, “the President of the Pedagogical Council must call that person, informing him of his condition and verifying what spaces and activities he attended at the University in the 48 hours prior to the onset of symptoms.” Likewise, according to the same source, an attempt should be made to determine whether “during those days he had any contact considered high risk with other members of the academic community” and, if so, it must be confirmed that the Health Authorities and those members were notified.

In about 20 thousand people who make up the academic community, the rectory reports having “knowledge that there will be six cases, independent, in isolation” and assures that it has not received “any notification from the health authorities.” In addition, he points out that “there are no active transmission channels at the University of Minho.”

In this context, the rectory of the institution reinforces the importance of “permanent and correct use of the mask, of complying with physical distance, of frequent hand hygiene, of respecting the defined entry, exit and circulation circuits in the spaces and to comply with the legal obligation not to participate in meetings with more than ten people ”. However, the State of Calamity prohibits gatherings of more than five people.

* COMUM contacted the Faculty of Economics and Management, however, as of the date of this publication, it has not yet obtained any statement.
