Constitutionalist Jorge Bacelar Gouveia is being investigated for corruption within the framework of the “Tutti-Frutti” process, which has been investigating since 2017 a network of alleged crimes of corruption and influence peddling that involve personalities from the PS and PSD, advances this Saturday.

On the verge of being appointed an advisory judge to the Supreme Court of Justice, the professor and former PSD deputy is suspected of facilitating the granting of doctorates to students from some Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP’s) in exchange for compensation, which according to TVI would be diamonds. The suspicions come from a conversation he had with the former PSD deputy, Sérgio Azevedo, who was heard in the Tutti-Frutti process and who was his student at the Universidade Nova. TVI says that an investigation was even opened to investigate the professor.

Bacelar Gouveia ran for the Supreme Court of Justice as a “jurist by merit.” The Observer tried unsuccessfully to contact him. On Saturday the constitutionalist guaranteed that he had never been heard in the process. “I don’t know anything,” he said.

The investigation of the Tutti-Frutti case began in 2017, in an attempt to dismantle a network of alleged crimes of corruption and influence peddling that involves PS and PSD personalities. At the end of 2018, when Edígio Cardoso was about to retire, the experience had not yet been handed over to any UPFC specialist. The case ended up being handled by a high-ranking PJ specialist, who, by order of the MP, had to hand it over to Cardoso.
