The British prime minister on Tuesday called for a new deadline for negotiations with Brussels on Brexit, the third since he took over the leadership of the United Kingdom, during a meeting with EU ministers. Boris Johnson believes that discussions on the exit deal remain difficult and have little prospect of consensus.

The EU’s main Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, pointed out that despite Brexit at a crucial time, a deal was still possible, according to the British newspaper “The Guardian”. Barnier said Boris Johnson had already suggested a deal twice before, but that he always came back. “It is the third unilateral deadline that Johnson imposes without an agreement,” said the Brexit negotiator, clarifying that there is still time for a final agreement.

“The negotiations are in a difficult phase,” Barnier told European ministers. Still, he said the talks now have a “constructive tone” as the deadline for the final exit from the European Union is coming to an end.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to the same publication, said that a final agreement “must be in the interest of both parties, both the British interest and that of the 27 of the European Union.” Thus, Michel Barnier published on the social network Twitter that “the European Union will continue to work for a fair agreement in the coming days and weeks.”
