Political commentator Luís Marques Mendes described the 2021 State Budget bill (OE2021), which will be delivered to Parliament on Monday, as a “strong social inclination”, highlighting measures such as the new social support and the increase in the minimum unemployment benefit. , among others, which, he says, will make it difficult for the left and the PAN to justify voting against the proposal.

The political commentator listed some of the data on the macroeconomic scenario that had already been known after the Government meetings with the parties on Tuesday, among which GDP will grow by 5.4% next year, after a break of 8.5 % this year; the deficit will fall to 4.3% in 2021, after reaching 7.3% this year; and that public investment “without captivity” will grow by 22%.
He also highlighted the increase in the minimum unemployment benefit to 502 euros, announcing that “this change is not only temporary, it is definitive”, as well as that the lowest pensions will have an extraordinary increase of 10 euros in August. Marques Mendes also points out that the proposal provides for an exemption from the increase in autonomous taxation for micro and SMEs with losses in 2020 and 2021 and that there will be no loan from the State to Novo Banco.
Regarding the new social support, the political commentator assures that the measure will cost 450 million euros to the public coffers and will cover about 170 thousand people. According to the Economic Journal, in Friday’s edition, the amount paid will be a difference between the lost income and the reference to the poverty line, so the Government stipulates that no one will receive a minimum amount of less than 50 euros.
Given the weight of the social sector in OE2021, the commentator considers that the PCP “in principle will abstain and make the Budget feasible,” as well as the PAN, while the “Bloco de Esquerda has a very difficult situation.”
“With a budget with a strong social burden, it is very difficult to vote against it. Two of the issues that are being claimed are addressed: the new social benefit and the lack of money for the Novo Banco, “he said, arguing that the demand for the blockade of labor laws would buy the Government” a war with Brussels.
