Vasiliy Kulkov, a former Russian footballer who played for Benfica, FC Porto and Alverca in the 1990s, died on Saturday. He was 54 years old. Kulkov lost the fight against cancer. In the last hours there was also news that the former soccer player had tested positive for covid-19. Benfica in 1991/92, where he stayed for three seasons. He played 77 games, scored 13 goals, won a championship and a Portuguese Cup. In 1994/95 the Russian midfielder moved to FC Porto, where he was champion and won the Super Cup.

Then he returned to Russia, to Spartak Moscow, but he did not stay long. He ventured to England, in Millwall, in 1996, returning to his native country the following year, to wear the Zenit jersey.

In 1999/00 he returned to Portugal to play one season at Alverca, and ended up hanging up his boots the following season, at Shatura.

He was a Russian international and later began a coaching career, having worked for Marítimo as an assistant to Byshovets.
