The co-driver of a Spanish car died on Saturday after the loss of a vehicle just a few hundred meters after the start of the first section of the Vidreiro Rally, the organization of the race confirmed.
“Laura Salvo, 21-year-old Spanish co-driver, passed away this morning during the first special of the Rally Vidreiro Centro de Portugal – Marinha Grande. “The vehicle was lost about 500/600 meters after the start of the first section, having collided with a pine tree. The victim was jailed and the means of assistance responded almost immediately, since they were very close,” explained the commander of the Marinha Grande volunteer firefighters, Vítor Graça, speaking with Lusa.
When she was released, the victim was in cardiorespiratory arrest. “The resuscitation maneuvers began successfully. The INEM helicopter was activated [Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica] and the victim was transported, already stabilized and intubated, to the air landing zone, about 200/300 meters from the place where he was, ”but death would be declared at 11:15 am still revealed.
The president of the Clube Automóvel da Marinha Grande explained the incident: “Unfortunately, we have to report a death in our rally. Competitor Laura Salvo, who competed as a navigator in the Peugeot Rally Cup Iberica, suffered an accident just at the beginning of the first stage , ending El Clube Automóvel da Marinha Grande and the respective means of assistance arrived at the place in approximately two minutes, doing everything possible to save the young competitor, trying to resuscitate him. The means took the victim to an area where it was possible to arrive from an emergency medical helicopter, but the competitor finally died on the spot. There were 27 operations at the site, supported by eight vehicles and an aerial vehicle from INEM.
This Friday the qualifying tests of the Vidreiro Centro de Portugal Rally, the sixth race of the Portuguese Rally Championship, took place, with the official race starting today.
