The unregistered deputy Cristina Rodrigues presented two bills to reform the Labor Code to include justified absences to care for companion animals and guarantee the right to mourn the death of these animals. In the first case, a maximum of seven days a year refers to “providing urgent and essential assistance in case of illness or accident”, and in the second case there would be the possibility of taking a day without loss of salary.

According to the elected deputy in the PAN lists, these legislative changes reflect the evolution in the relationship between humans and pets, “with most of their holders considering them already an integral part of the family and the judicial system itself reflects the growing importance of animals in our lives by legislating their protection and criminalizing abuse ”.

The justification for absences related to animal care currently depends on the employer, in a decision that “is based on the sensitivity of the employer, which seems highly discriminatory and a factor of inequality among workers,” defends the elected Circle of Setúbal, she became the second unregistered deputy of this legislature, after Joacine Katar Moreira did not renounce her mandate after losing the political confidence of Livre.

Cristina Rodrigues cites in her legislative initiatives a GfK study that indicated the existence of 6.3 million pets in Portuguese households in 2015, covering more than half of the families. “If in the past, in Portugal, animals had, to a large extent, the purpose of helping with work and safety, today they are seen by the vast majority of people as members of the household,” he adds.
