The National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof) updated the list of schools with positive cases of covid-19 among students, teachers and staff, increasing to 141 schools with records of outbreaks.
During the morning of this Friday, Fenprof released the name of 122 public and private schools where there were or had been cases of covid-19.
After the publication of the document, “There were several contacts established with Fenprof that led to its updating, now adding 141 establishments”, the federation refers in a statement sent to the editorial offices.
Within five hours, Fenprof was informed of 23 more cases, but it also had to remove four educational establishments from the list, as there were no outbreaks in the school environment during the current school year.
In question were the Monte da Ola School Group (AE), in Viana do Castelo, and the AE of Santa Maria Maior, which has students in quarantine, but due to contagion in relatives, explains Fenprof.
The Jaime Cortesão secondary school, in Coimbra, and the António Aleixo Foundation, in Quarteira, also disappeared from the list because the contagion cases occurred at the end of the previous school year.
The list of schools published this Friday by Fenprof is available on the federation’s website, which promises to update the information.
With the list of schools, Fenprof came to question the data advanced this Wednesday by the Directorate General of Health (DGS) that pointed to only 23 active outbreaks in the school environment.
Fenprof returned this Friday to request from the Ministry of Education the list of establishments in which there have been or exist cases, as well as the request to know what procedures were adopted in each of them.
The union structure recalls that the guardianship has ten days to respond to the request and that it will go to court if the term passes without the ministry giving any information.
Fenprof again criticizes the way authorities are dealing with outbreaks in the school environment, lamenting that there are different measures between schools.
As a general rule, the infected person is placed in prophylactic isolation. However, “all those who shared spaces with her continue to travel to schools, without any test being carried out,” criticizes the federation.
On Thursday, Fenprof’s general secretary condemned the fact that few screening tests were done, recalling that young people are often asymptomatic.
“When cases of Covid-19 appear, the rule has been not to carry out tests, asking only that each one be aware of the possibility of developing symptoms suggestive of being infected”, reinforces the statement of this Friday.
In addition, he adds, teachers “have to stay at work without taking any exams” even when they have classes in quarantine.
For this reason, Fenprof once again demands that the ministry adopt standardized procedures in all municipalities in the country and that tests be carried out whenever covid-19 situations arise in schools.
