The General Directorate of Health (DGS) announced in the daily bulletin this Friday that there are a total of 2,062 deaths and 83,928 cases of covid-19 in Portugal since the start of the pandemic.

The number of deaths increased from 2,050 to 2,062, 12 more than Thursday: 8 in the Lisbon region and the Tagus Valley, 3 in the North region, 1 in the Center.

The number of infected people increased from 82,534 to 83,928, more than 1,394. This is the second highest number of cases of infection. The highest was on April 10, with 1,516.

In the past 24 hours, another 647 patients were reported to have recovered. Since the start of the pandemic in Portugal in March, 52,164 people have recovered from the disease.

Regarding hospitalizations, there are 10 more patients, totaling 811. In intensive care there are 10 more patients, out of a total of 125.

Health authorities have 47,721 contacts under surveillance, an additional 1,539 compared to Thursday.

Numbers by region

In the region of Lisbon and Tagus Valley Another 559 new cases of infection were reported, with 42,266 cases and 822 deaths in the region.

The region North today 689 new cases of covid-19 are registered, totaling 30,800 and 908 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In the region Center 96 more cases were recorded, representing 6,758 infections and 272 deaths.

Not Alentejo 11 new cases of covid-19 were reported, totaling 1,615, with a total of 25 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The region of Algarve today it has reported 31 more cases of contagion, totaling 1,923 cases and 20 deaths.

In the Autonomous Community of Azores Three new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, adding 294 detected infections and 15 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

A Madeira recorded five new cases in the last 24 hours, representing 272 infections, with no deaths to date.

Gender and age

Confirmed cases are distributed in all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years. The age group of 40 and 49 years is the one with the highest value.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 38,166 men and 45,762 women in Portugal, according to reported cases.

Of the total number of fatalities, 1,032 were men and 1,030 women.

The highest number of deaths is still concentrated in people over 80 years of age.

At least 1,057 million deaths worldwide

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than one million fifty-seven thousand deaths worldwide since December last year, including 2,050 in Portugal.

In Europe, the highest number of fatalities is registered in the United Kingdom (42,592 deaths, more than 561 thousand cases), followed by Italy (36,083 deaths, more than 338 thousand cases), Spain (32,688 deaths, more than 848 thousand cases) and France (32,521 deaths, more than 671 thousand cases).

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the Americas are now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
