New York court orders Trump to file tax returns

New York’s second appeals court in Manhattan has announced that the stay of the trial court’s decision will remain in effect, so that Trump’s attorneys can appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.

A district judge dismissed efforts by defense attorneys to invalidate a subpoena that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s office issued to Donald Trump’s accountants.

A Justice Department spokesman said the US government is reviewing the district judge’s decision.

Cyrus Vance and Trump have been in a legal arm since August 2019, when the attorney requested the filing of tax returns from the president for eight years, as part of an investigation into their business activity.

One case concerns an alleged payment to a pornographic actress, with money raised for the 2016 presidential campaign, to obtain her silence on a sexual case.

Trump’s attorneys have denied serving any documents, claiming that the incumbent president cannot be investigated, an argument that has never been proven in court and is expected to end up in the Supreme Court.
