The now former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing African-American George Floyd was released on Wednesday on bail of one million dollars (the equivalent of 849,000 euros).
Derek Chauvin, 44, was released on probation on Wednesday and is expected to appear in court in March next year, NBC television said. The former cop was charged with Floyd’s second degree murder and manslaughter when he had nine minutes with his knee choking his neck against the asphalt. The United States Attorney’s Office also charged the other three agents who accompanied Chauvin when Floyd pleaded for air.
The fatal moment of the arrest, which occurred on May 25, served as a fuse for numerous anti-racism and anti-abuse demonstrations in several US states.
Chauvin had 18 complaints in 18 years with the police
Chauvin joined the Minneapolis, Minnesota police in 2002. In 18 years of service, he has accumulated 18 complaints. Only two of the charges ended with “disciplinary action”, according to the summary of Internal Services of the Ministries Police Department (MPD, in its original acronym). In both cases, Chauvin was reprimanded in writing.
According to data from the Community Against Police Brutality, a non-profit association that groups complaints against the Police of that State, cited by CNN, Chauvin was also verbally reprimanded for using “humiliating tone”, “derogatory language” and other language that disciplines deserved during service.
