The new leader of the Volta a Itália is Portuguese. This Monday, João Almeida wrote another chapter, and one of the most beautiful, in the history of national sport.

João Almeida is 22 years old and was born in Caldas da Rainha. Like many young people, the journey in sport began with swimming and, of course, soccer. Only then did he come to know cycling and never let it go. It started late for the usual and for those who want to continue in the sport professionally, first in mountain biking, then on the road. But this detail did not prevent him from making history at 22 and repeating a feat from 31 years ago.

The cyclist had already “threatened” to have a voice in Italy in the first stage of the Giro. Deceuninck-Quick Step rider arrived, second in the Volta ao Algarve youth award, who finished the Volta a Burgos in third place in the individual category and overall points and who won the youth award in the Tour de L “Ain leading the against the clock and finishing just behind Filippo Ganna, world champion of the specialty.

This Monday the consecration arrived. João Almeida once again led Portugal to the top, after finishing the 150 kilometers of the third stage that traveled Etna in 11th position, and the world once again saw a Portuguese in the pink jersey. The last time was in 1989, with Acácio da Silva, after having won the second stage of the race precisely on Etna, then 28 years old. João is 22 years old. And he has already achieved such a great feat only on his first experience on a Grand Tour.
