After the climb to Etna, the Portuguese stayed with the same time as Jonathan Caicedo, the winner of the stage, but with an advantage in the tenths of a second of the time trial.

This Monday João Almeida (Deceuninck – Quick Step) became the new leader of the Giro d’Italia, after the third stage that ended with a climb to Mount Etna, 150 kilometers from Enna, succeeding Italian Filippo Ganna (INEOS).

Until now, Acácio da Silva was the first and only Portuguese to wear pink at the Giro, which happened 31 years ago, curiously after a victory for the Portuguese emigrant on Etna.

The Portuguese has the same time (7h44m25s) as the Ecuadorian Jonathan Caicedo (EF Pro Cycling) in the general classification, which generated some confusion about whether the historic feat would materialize. It was necessary to resort to the tenths of a second of the time trial, in which Almeida was second on Saturday, to break the tie in his favor.

On the stage, Caicedo won alone, with 4h02m33s, ahead of Giovanni Visconti (Vini Zabù KTM) and Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Soudal), while Almeida was eleventh, 1m03s behind the winner. Caicedo was 1m13s late overall, but received a 10-second bonus for winning.

Tomorrow, the stage will have 140 until Villafranco Tirrena, without great difficulties. Although tied in time with the Ecuadorian, Almeida will have the chance to keep the rose, with Wednesday being the only truly difficult stage until next Saturday. If he resists, the young man will survive two days in the pink shirt that Acácio da Silva wore in 1989.
