The extraordinary meeting of the Council of State was held last Tuesday, at the Palacio de la Citadela, in Cascais, precisely to ensure social distance between the different participants and in which are, among other advisers, the President of the Republic and several former heads of state, the prime minister and the president of the Assembly of the Republic.

At this meeting, and as can be seen in the video posted on the Presidency of the Republic page, the participants wore a mask and the chairs are spaced apart. Lobo Xavier, lawyer and political commentator, sat between Leonor Beleza, president of the Champalimaud Foundation, and Francisco Louçã.

Cavaco Silva, Ramalho Eanes, Jorge Sampaio, Rui Rio and Francisco Pinto Balsemão were some of the participants in what was the first face-to-face meeting of the Council of State in times of pandemic.

However, several state advisers who participated in the meeting have already been evaluated and the first results were negative.

This is the case of the Prime Minister and President of the Assembly of the Republic, Ferro Rodrigues. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who chaired Tuesday’s meeting, has not been subjected to tests since he did so this weekend, with negative results, reports Lusa.

Rui Rio, Ramalho Eanes and the president of the Constitutional Court, Manuel da Costa Andrade, will only be examined on Monday.

The urgency of these assessments is also due to the fact that the October 5 celebrations are scheduled for tomorrow morning, which include some of these high figures of the State. The commemorative ceremony of the Implantation of the Republic is scheduled for 10:30 am, at Praça do Município, in Lisbon.

Shortly before the news was known that António Lobo Xavier is infected with the new coronavirus, Marques Mendes had addressed in his usual comment on Sunday on the SIC the meeting of the Council of State – where the commentator was also present.

At that time, Marques Mendes would not be in possession of this information and only took the opportunity to praise the President of the European Commission. “He is a person with very neat ideas, very firm and determined, who is making a peaceful revolution in the European Union.”

Ursula Von der Leyen will leave several traces in the European Union – from the migration pact to putting issues such as the environment and the digital transition on the agenda – and one in particular will remain in history, he said. “The financial bazooka, from which we will benefit with 750,000 million euros, saved the European Union. If it weren’t for that decision, Europe would now be deeply divided, undermined by populism and extremism ”.
