The businessman David Neeleman, who left this Friday to be a TAP shareholder with the conclusion of the agreement with the Portuguese State, said that, with his departure, he was “once again doing the best for TAP.”

In a message sent to the airline’s employees, to which Lusa had access, Neeleman said goodbye to TAP with the confidence that “all the strategic objectives agreed with the Government” were met, after the privatization of part of the company.

“I always wanted the best for TAP. This is how it was in 2015, when I applied for privatization and believed when no one else believed, and it is like this today when I close the agreement with the Portuguese State to stop being a TAP shareholder, ”wrote David Neeleman.

“Unfortunately, the covid pandemic, its impact on the global aviation industry and the decisions made in the specific context of TAP, did not allow me to continue. TAP really needs shareholder stability and that’s why I agreed to leave, ”he explained, guaranteeing that he is“ doing what’s best for TAP again ”.

The employer assures the workers, in the same letter, that the carrier “is today a very different company from what it was, as a result of the work of all of you. In the last four years, TAP has become a more robust TAP, with a renewed, more efficient and ecological fleet, with diversified, more international, more sustainable and attractive markets ”.

The businessman also believes that “all the strategic objectives agreed with the Government” have been met, and said that “I am convinced that the TAP workers, who are its greatest asset, united in the context of the new corporate structure, will know how to find a route to the viability and success ”of the company.

“I want to thank Humberto [Pedrosa] for being my partner and I wish him and all the TAP workers a lot of concentration and stamina to get TAP back up, which I think is possible. I still want and always want the best for TAP ”, Neeleman guaranteed.

The employer also expressed “gratitude to all TAP workers” for the way he was received, “for their technical quality, ability to execute and passion,” according to the message.

“I am very proud to have been part of this team and this project, in Portugal. A fantastic country, which I will always continue promoting, which I like a lot, where I made many friends and where I will always return ”, concluded the businessman.

The State today completed the acquisition of the shareholding of the private shareholders of TAP, which translates into public control of 72.5% of the airline, an operation that resulted in the departure of Neeleman from the group, ceasing to be a shareholder and holding positions.
