The Defense Minister annulled, by order issued this Friday, the “directive on the use of non-discriminatory language” in the Armed Forces, justifying that it is a “working document” that “needs superior approval.”

“I learned of the dispatch from the General Secretariat of Offices (…) with the title ‘Directive on the use of non-discriminatory language, addressed to EMGFA, the branches and the central services of the ministry (…). because it lacks superior approval, and because it is a working document that does not show an adequate state of maturity, the aforementioned letters must be considered voided, ”reads the document to which SOL had access. The order is dated today, signed by João Gomes Cravinho and addressed to the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGFA), the three military branches and all the organs and agencies of the National Defense.

It is recalled that the directive in question, prepared by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Defense, provided that the Armed Forces should be inclusive and neutral when mentioning someone or something.

The aim was to use terminology that treats women and men equally, whether in written documents or in verbal communications. The directive also included examples of expressions that should not be used, such as: “Stop being silly” and “You look like a girl, act like a man.”

Given the content of the directive, on Wednesday the minister put the issue in perspective and stated that he would not “spend much time thinking about the matter.”

“What is truly important is the work being done to promote gender equality within the Armed Forces. So if you say ‘born on’ or ‘date of birth’, this is absolutely minor, it has no relevance and, for my part, I confess that I do not intend to spend a lot of time thinking about this matter, “he said, in statements to the agency .
