Donald Trump’s age and weight are higher risk factors for covid-19. Melania performed an operation on a kidney, which could also put her in danger.
The president of the United States confirmed this morning that he is infected with the new coronavirus. At 74 years old and visibly overweight, Donald Trump should be among the group of people most at risk of serious consequences due to covid-19.
In Portugal, the elderly are the most affected by covid-19, with 67% of deaths registered among people over 80 years of age. The previous age group, from 70 to 79 years, concentrates 20% of the total deaths from pandemic in Portuguese territory.
In the US, age groups are arranged slightly differently. According to the Center for Infectious Disease Control (CDC), people ages 65 to 74 are five times more likely to be hospitalized and 90 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than young adults ages 18 to 29.
At 1.90 meters tall, Trump weighs 110 kilograms, which corresponds to a body mass index of 30.5. Technically, the president of the United States is obese.
Age and obesity have been high risk factors
Besides age, obesity is another risk factor for covid-19. In the case of Trump, these will be the only worrying factors, since precise data on the state of health of the president of the United States are not known.
“We don’t know if he has other diseases, such as diabetes or heart problems. The main risks for Trump are age and being overweight, and these have been very high risk factors,” said Barry Dixon, a physician in the Intensive Care at St. Vincent from Melbourne, Australia, quoted by the British newspaper “The Guardian”.
“When you look at Trump, it looks like I’m overweight. And he’s 74 years old,” added Christine Jenkins, director of respiratory diseases at the “George Institute for Global Health” in Sydney, Australia.
“I don’t know if he has hypertension or glucose intolerance, but Trump seems to be the type of person who doesn’t like to know if he has vulnerabilities,” Jenkins added to “The Guardian.”
Based on what is known from the latest medical exam, conducted in April, Trump’s blood pressure was slightly elevated. But there was no evidence of cancer, kidney disease, diabetes, or other conditions that put him at higher risk.
“There was nothing significant or noteworthy in the exams,” Trump’s personal physician, Sean Conley, was quoted as saying by the US television channel CNN, after consulting the president.
Melania had a kidney operation, which may mean a higher risk
The first lady of the United States, Melania Trump, 50, is also infected with the new coronavirus. Younger than the president, you may have other additional risks.
People ages 50 to 64 have a three times higher risk of hospitalization due to the new coronavirus and a 30 times higher risk of death than young adults, according to data from the CDC.
Melania Trump, a former model, exercises and has a healthy diet, but in 2018 she underwent unspecified surgery for a kidney problem, according to the White House.
People with kidney problems are at higher risk of developing a more serious form of COVID-19, warns the National Kidney Association of the United States.
Given the secrecy surrounding Trump and the First Lady’s medical condition, it is unknown what type of kidney disease Melania has and how serious it could be. Even less is known about the overall health of the US president’s wife, as well as her own, so the real risk will only be known as the days go by.
