This Thursday the eighth round of the Football Leaks round took place.

One of the hard drives seized from Rui Pinto, which was decrypted by the creator of Football Leaks and identified by the Judicial Police (PJ) as RP3, had 488 enabled mailboxes, specialist José São Bento said Thursday.

The afternoon of the eighth session of the trial, in the Central Criminal Court of Lisbon, was fully occupied by the hearing of the unit for the fight against cybercrime and technological crime of the PJ and was highly technical in nature, with the analysis of files and software found on the disk that corroborated access to the computer systems of the entities named in the accusation to Rui Pinto.

José São Bento explained that the creator of Football Leaks not only had the credentials, but also the digital certificates necessary to bypass the verification mechanisms of the computer systems of some attacked entities, such as the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the law firm of lawyers. PLMJ, the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), Sporting or the investment fund Doyen.

“We found software installation execution lines that allow us to explore weaknesses and track equipment and network level,” said the Judicial specialist, who also identified “programs to capture credentials” and “file transfer protocols” on that disk: “We found unambiguous FPF access logs and credential screenshots within the PLMJ system.”

According to José São Bento, there were also records of credential interception processes, mainly when information was redirected to Internet pages similar to those that users were looking for and that, in fact, allowed the collection of access data. For example, in relation to the FPF, there was a “continuous monitoring” of Rui Pinto, who even updated the page when the Federation made changes to the site.

The hearing of the PJ specialist was so technical that, at certain moments, the puzzled looks of judges and lawyers were noticed, to which some laughter was added when assistant judge Ana Paula Conceição summarized the limitation of computer knowledge of the collective of judges: “We are more homicides.”

The trial of the Football Leaks case continues next Tuesday, continuing with the José São Bento hearing.
