The northern and central regions will be affected by the Alex Depression starting Thursday. The IPMA predicts strong winds, rain and a drop in temperature.
Alex’s depression, the first of the 2020-2021 season, will cross the mainland on Thursday and Friday. The effects, indicates the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmsofera (IPMA), “will be felt essentially through the increased wind intensity from the end of October 1, extending until the end of October 2, especially in the North and Central regions. “The gusts can reach 75 km / h on the coast and up to 110 km / h in the mountains.
In a statement, the institute said that, “additionally, this depression is associated with a frontal system of moderate activity, which will approach from the late afternoon of day 1, and will travel the entire territory during day 2, accompanied by locally intense rains in the northern regions of the Montejunto-Estrela mountain system“.
On the 2nd, Friday, “there is also a temperature drop, especially the maximum, which will vary approximately between 12 and 18 ° C in the northern regions of the Tagus Valley and between 18 and 25 ° C in the south ”.
A significant increase in sea turbulence is also expected on the west coast, particularly between the early hours of the 2nd and the early hours of the 3rd, especially north of Cabo Raso, where significant wave heights can reach 4 to 5 meters.
