The rector Amílcar Falcão criticized today the CCDR of the Center for not mentioning the University of Coimbra (UC) in the 20/30 program and affirmed that “there are red lines” that cannot be crossed.

“It is important that you do not look at a report from the Center’s Commission for Coordination and Regional Development (CCDR), which describes the strategy [da região] for 20/30, which is ten years, “and” the University [de Coimbra] do not mention it even once, ”said the rector, who spoke today at the UC Faculty of Economics, in the presentation session of the Platform for the Development of the Coimbra Region.

The document “Strategic Vision for the Central Region 2030 ″, prepared by the CCDR of the Center, began to be elaborated approximately a year ago, to define strategies and the application of community funds in the period between 2021 and 2027, but, after the The covid-19 pandemic, adjusted to the new situation and to a new calendar and in accordance with the support that the European Union will make available to face the crisis. The public consultation of the document ended on September 25.

“I think it is very serious”, the report does not make any reference to the UC, Amílcar Falcão stressed, questioning “where is the heritage, innovation, health, safety, management”, among other areas.

“Anyway, he could be talking about several things at the University,” he added, asking “where is the entity that has more patents in 2019” or that has “more competitive funding than [programa] Horizon Europe 2020 ”, he also exemplified. “Not showing up in the 2030 report is a really bad thing,” he said.

The dean of UC already “alerted the CCDR of the Center of the situation,” he added, arguing that “it is not even admissible” that this has happened. “And there are red lines that cannot be crossed,” he said.

Amílcar Falcão also said that he was “a relatively calm person” and that “he avoids direct confrontations”, but insisted that “there are red lines that really cannot be crossed.”

Also participating in the session were the president of the Intermunicipal Community (CIM) of the Coimbra Region, José Carlos Alexandrino and his executive secretary, Jorge Brito, the director of Innovation of the Pedro Nunes Institute (IPN), Carlos Cerqueira, and the director of the Faculty of Economics of the UC, Álvaro Garrido, among other officials.

When addressing Jorge Brito, who is the only candidate for the vice-presidency of the CCDR of the Center chosen by the mayors of the hundred municipalities, the rector said that he expected him to be elected, thus manifesting an “almost desire for anticipation.” The current president of the Commission, Isabel Damasceno, is the only candidate for the same position, in the elections scheduled for October 13 (the other vice president will be appointed by the Government).

The Platform for the Development of the Coimbra Region, which was presented today, is evaluating the effects of the pandemic in the 19 municipalities that make up the CIM of the Coimbra Region.
